Troodos Zivania Festival
On Sunday 4th December the 2nd Annual Troodos Zivania Festival will take place, marking the start of a series of events in celebration of Zivania, for the whole of December, which has been named Zivania Month in Cyprus.
The first part of the Troodos Zivania Festival will take place in the village of Alona, in the village square, on Sunday 4th December from 11am until 4pm. All are welcome to come along and enjoy free tastings of this traditional Cypriot alcohol drink.
Zivania has its history dating far back to the fourteenth century, and even then it was produced in the village of Alona, which has the highest vineyards in Cyprus, and is steeped in natural beauty. The production of Zivania in this little village plays a huge role in the daily lives of the residents.
If you haven’t heard of Zivania before, then its time you did. There will be a presentation at the festival showing how this very strong distilled spirit is produced from the residues of pressed grapes which were used for the production of wine, as well as information about its history.
Since 2004, Zivania has been registered as a protected Cypriot product within the EU, which restricts its production only to Cyprus.
The day will offer a chance to take a look around the village, and visit the picturesque Ayios Giorgios Church. There will be free tastings of Zivania, as well as the traditional snacks that are usually eaten with it, such as pallouze, soutzoukos, dried fruit and nuts.
Besides the free tastings, there will also be plenty of food and drink on sale, as well as traditional crafts. There will also be traditional music and dancing performed by the Anatoliki Mesogios group.
There will be free buses to the Troodos Zivania Festival on Sunday from Nicosia and Limassol.
From Nicosia: at the Handicrafts Centre at 10am and return at 4pm
From Limassol: at the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) information centre, Yermasoyia at 9.30am and return at 5.30pm.
Call 22674264 or 25323211 to book a place. Go and along and celebrate this traditional Cypriot produce, and show your support to the villagers who produce Zivania.
Zivania Month is organised jointly by the Troodos Tourism Development Company (ETAP), the association of the Pitsilia region expatriates and the Alona community board.
We will publish further events relating to Zivania Month as we get them. Meantime you can download the official Zivania Festival brochure in English here.
