The 50th Limassol Wine Festival – 2011

Update October 2011:

Everyone who paid for a ticket to enter the Limassol Wine Festival (2011) had a free entry into the lottery to win a car from Emporium Cars. I hope you all kept your entrance ticket, which has a number on it at the bottom left, because someone out there has won a car, and as of today, 6th October, nobody has come forward to claim it!

The Limassol Wine Festival car winner is the person who holds the ticket with the number 35762.

Congratulations to whoever won. Please call the Limassol Municipality Office to claim your prize.

On Thursday 8th September the annual Limassol Wine Festival will commence at 8pm. This is the 50th year of the Wine Festival in Limassol.

The Limassol Wine Festival was the brainchild of the late Cleanthis Christoforou, who back in 1961 was the Chairman of the Lemesos (Limassol) Development Association. He put his plans for the festival to the Association, sweeping aside the sceptics amongst his collegues, and said “Stand by me and we will do it.” And they certainly did, because 50 years on the Limassol Wine Festival is still one of the most popular festivals in Cyprus, attracting locals, tourists, the young and the older people – everyone loves it!

The slogan of the festival is ‘Drink Wine for Longer Life’, and the emblem is ‘Vraka’ which is the 7 meter high statue that you cannot miss when you enter the Municipal Gardens from the main beachside gates. Vraka was made by George Mavrogenis back in 1962 as a decoration for the festival. It depicts a Cypriot winegrower in his tradition local costume, and was considered the best decoration, and so became the traditional emblem.

The Limassol Wine Festival is about having fun, tasting the local wines, eating local foods, as well as entertainment including traditional music and dancing.

The cost of entrance to the festival is 6 euros for adults (see full details below), but this includes free wine when inside the festival as well as an entry into the draw to win a car. There are also free buses to and from the Wine Festival.

See below the full program for the Limassol Wine Festival 2011, as well as details for the free bus service, and entry costs.
