Monday 4th June 2012 is a public bank holiday in Cyprus. This is a religious holiday for the feast of the Pentecost, otherwise known as Whitsun, or the day of the Holy Spirit, as it commemorates the descent of the Holy Ghost to the Apostles. The festival that takes place is known as Kataklysmos, or the water festival. The feast of the Pentecost is always 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter.
The water festival events will take place mostly in the coastal towns, but also wherever there is water, such as rivers, dams etc. Thousands of people attend these events as they are fun for all the family, and take place around the water, which is good for cooling off now that the Cyprus weather is warming up.
The main events will be on Monday 4th June, however many of the coastal towns such as Limassol, Larnaka and Agia Napa will be extending the festivities to last 3 days, to include Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There will be much entertainment including concerts, games, competitions, singing and dancing, as well as eating and drinking. The events are free for all to join in, so do go along and have some fun in the Cyprus sun and water!
Kataklysmos events in Paphos will take place on Monday 4th June outside the castle and at the harbour, and will include concerts, dance groups and water sport competitions.
Kataklysmos events in Limassol will be held for 3 days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) along the seaside promenade west of the municipal gardens. They will include stalls and plenty of entertainment from artists, as well as events and competitions at sea.
Kataklysmos events in Larnaca will take place over a 4 day period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday) on the seafront promenade. The events will commence on Friday evening, and culminate on Monday night with a Fireworks show and a concert. There will be a lot of entertainment for all the family to enjoy, including many stalls selling toys and traditional Cypriot foods, Greek and Cypriot singers and dance troupes, competions in the water, and the Cypriot traditional culture takes pride of place with a competition for chatista, or rhyming songs, in the Cypriot dialect.
