Its Limassol Carnival time again!
The mild Cyprus weather this winter may have helped us through some-what of a difficult time in Cyprus, but if you are looking for something more to lift your spirits then 2 weeks of carnival spirit should do the trick.
Traditionally Cypriots see the first day of the Limassol Carnival (Καρναβάλι Λεμεσού) being on Thursday which is known as ’tsiknopempti’ or smoky Thursday, this is because all around Limassol you will see bbq’s being lit up, and thousands of people congregate mainly in the town centre to eat, drink and be jolly. Its also known as ‘Shrove Thursday’. Also later in the day the ‘King of Carnival’ will enter the city, much to the joy of the thousands that gather to welcome him. This year’s King Carnival is titled ‘King Memorandum the Great’ being a reference to the bailout crisis. Chosen for King this year is car rally champion Dimis Mavropoulos.
King Carnival will enter the city on an illuminated float, and will be accompanied by his entourage, as well as the Limassol Serenaders, the Ariones Choir, the Limassol Majorettes, the Limassol Municipality Brass Band, the Batucinio percussion instrument group and various local dignitaries. Carnival King will set off at 7pm from Grigoris Afxentiou Square, and pass down Anexartisias, Ayios Andreos, Karaiskaki, Stasinou and Andrea Drousioti streets, and will terminate in a party in Heroes’ Square to the music of El Emmascarado.
For two weeks there will be daily carnival events, including the children’s carnival parade on Sunday 23rd February setting off at 11.30 am from the Limassol sea front road (opposite Citizens Service Centre - at the old port roundabout), and ending at the Municipal Gardens south entrance.
The grand finale is on Sunday 2nd March commencing at 1pm for the grand carnival parade which sets off from the Ayios Nikolaos roundabout traffic lights, and proceeds along Makarios III Avenue, ending at the Simillide’s Traffic Lights.
